Unless you live under a well secluded rock and shelter away from anything that resembles the UK skate media, you should already be aware that our full length “In Progress” DVD has been in skate stores around the country for a good couple of months now. If you bought the DVD, you probably noticed that the disc is evidently lacking any extra features, unused footage or other bonus material that you’d usually expect to be greeted with.

If you were wondering what was going on with the unused footage from “In Progress” you’ll be pleased to learn that we’ve spent the last couple of months working away on the leftover footage from the project, and the resulting “In Progress – The Bonus Disc” will be coming free as a covermount with next months issue of the mag.

“In Progress – The Bonus Disc” is another 30 minute long video, made up of full parts from Mark Baines, Josh “Manhead” Young, Vaughan Baker and Nick Remon, Barney Page, Conhuir and Denis Lynn and Harry Lintell, with appearances from Carl Shipman, Tom Harrison, Chris Jones, Nicky Howells, James Foster, Keith Walsh, and countless other heads from all over the UK and beyond.

In addition to the main Bonus Disc feature, most of the sponsors of the production have come through with special edits for the disc, so start expecting all new clips from Etnies, DC, Bones, Howies, Vans, WESC, Enjoi, Superdead and Monster.

This will be your only chance to get your mitts on the Bonus Disc, so be sure to stick some funds on one side now to avoid missing out!

After Jamie Turnbull himself appeared on the Sidewalk Forum wondering if his 1993 independent UK classic “Wide Eyed World” had been posted online anywhere yet, Mark Nicolson took it upon himself step to the plate and used a rainy day to digitise the full video for the rest of the world to see.

In case you are unaware, clocking in at a little over fifteen minutes in length, Wide Eyed World is a pretty important homegrown history lesson from a time when it was almost an annual event that someone put out a UK video, and, if common lore is to be believed, then it is also one of the first (if not the first) entirely independent UK productions, released the year before Mike Manzoori’s “Sound and Vision” which we previously shared with you at the start of 2011.

Primarily made up of montages featuring plenty of the regular heads in the UK scene at the time, including the likes of Alan Rushbrooke, Mark Baines, Ali Cairns, Neil Urwin, Matt Harfield, Simon Skipp, Dan Magee, Luke McKirdy, Matt Pritchard, Danny Wainwright, Colin Kennedy, Carl Shipman and Dave Allen, Wide Eyed World can be located waiting for you right below this very text! Click the play button below and embrace a healthy dose of super rare 18 year old UK footage…

Serious props to Mark Nicolson and Jamie Turnbull for making this happen!

Carl Shipman: a brief history lesson – taken from Sidewalk 147 (December 2008)

“Carl is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of Britain’s finest ever skateboarders and the indisputable owner of the throne of Worksop, from under whose royal gaze every other notable South Yorkshire based skater since has risen to your collective attention.
Carl was one of the first British skateboarders to succeed in America at a time when you could count the number of sponsored UK heads on one hand. Mr Shipman paved the way towards international acceptance that virtually every other British skater since has trodden upon and that alone, disregarding all the amazing things he did on his skateboard over that time, should insure his position in the UK hall of skateboarding fame forever.
Thrasher covers and groundbreaking tricks on one of the globe’s most celebrated Hubbas? Done that.
Pro models on massive US companies at the height of their powers and video parts filmed in a matter of days that still stand the test of time over a decade later? Check that one too.
Being one of the original DC team riders, hand picked by Danny Way for his all round ability and inimitably relaxed yet powerful and technical style? Yes no worries there either.
In short Carl Shipman has been and done things that most aspiring skate rats can only dream of and he did it all at a time when the idea of European skaters (let alone British ones) making it in the States was virtually unheard of, a position he achieved through sheer natural talent.

Sit back and pay attention to one of the founding fathers of modern British skateboarding, you might just learn something.”

And with that, it gives me great pleasure to kick off 2011 with one of the finest sections of all time – Mr Carl Shipman in Stereo’s “A Visual Sound”. Happy new year n’ that…
