In the overall series results Oakley’s third place was enough for him to seize victory in the A-Group over the injured Shaun Goff. A B-Group victory was deservedly claimed by Hem who rode like a wild man the whole series and is quite frankly lucky to not spend most of his life in hospital!

The B Group went first in a 30 minute ordered jam. Their best three runs counted so there were plenty of chances for variety and attempts at risky moves. With three of last years skaters promoted to the A Group this time around there was plenty of optimism amongst B Group’s rising stars of UK vert skating and many of them rode the best I’ve ever seen them skate. James Haney is definitely going much higher this year and with more style, Zippy (Leon Adams) always seems to raise his game for each contest and to hang on to some big moves, but this time it was James Hemming from the midlands who took top honours for his long rides, range of moves and ultimately his unique ‘nose blunt roll-in’ which he made on his second attempt, roared on by the enthusiastic crowd!

The A group had a stricter regime, using the same format as the X Games; 10 walls maximum, and only the best run counted. The ordered jam and subsequent “snake session” gave each skater at least six attempts to put together an intense, back to back display of their most, stylish, technical and spectacular vert skating. In the free-for-all frenzied “snake session” (an idea borrowed from Vert Attack 6 in Malmo last winter), everyone pushed themselves and the level of skating even higher in the competitive, action packed and hugely entertaining last five minutes. Highlight of the session was Sean’s massive backside ollie soaring over Jim’s mayday in their thrill-filled doubles run.
The legendary Sean Goff with his huge ollies and trade mark Todd Twists and his seemingly endless bag of tricks kept amazing us all and he finished equal 3rd with Oakley Liddell, who was landing several new tricks; frigid airs, blunt to fakie and a few 540’s amongst others. Second place went to last year’s vert series champion, local trickster and soon to be parent again, Jake Anderson, whose smooth blend of almost every variety of flip trick, rock solid 540’s and McTwists was only narrowly beaten by the winner, Andy Scott. Scotty’s stunning range of tasty technical tricks on the coping, inventive inverts and huge airs all pulled off with the smoothest of styles gave him his first win of the series this year.

B group best trick was won by Manfred Kuts for his 50-50 transfer.
A group best trick was won by young Matty Carlisle for landing a 720.

Last weekend was the turn of Adrenaline Alley in Corby to host their leg of the UK Independent Vert Series 2012. It’s the biggest ramp on the tour so you can bet there’s going to be some gnarly stuff going down. Unfortunately a dates clash meant some of the heads were out at an event in Milan but there was still a solid turnout and plenty of sick skating.

In the B-group victory went to young Mats Harlem who’d come all the way from Scandinavia for a session! Hem skated in his usual wild man style and finished off the jam with a roll in indy nose blunt which was just too stupid to comprehend!

A-group was a really mixed affair as you’d expect with the range of skaters present. Sean Goff had to settle for 5th due to a few too many falls (unlucky champ!) and Matty was edged down into 4th after not quite managing to ride out of a 720, though back to back 540′s are no joke! Matty is getting better and more powerful every time I see him skate, I dread to think what he’ll be capable of once he gets a bit of weight on him! Jimmy as usual skated his guts out and put in a load of solid runs and lovely frontside nose grinds.

It was Andy Scott’s birthday and he was definitely in the mood for having a laugh. He could have won this (and most other comps) with ease really but obviously that’s not something that bothers him. Lipslides whilst chucking thumbs up to the camera, benihana nosegrind and ‘The Cannonball Run’ put a smile on everyone’s face. Andy Scott, you’re the best!

Victory went to Oakley Liddell who really knows how to ride a skateboard properly. Good solid style, excellent trick choice and loads of power. Oakley always reminds me of guys like Grosso at their best – no gimmicks, just skateboarding done properly. Congratulations on your first A-group win, it was well deserved!

We handed out the trophies and sung “Happy Birthday” to Andy before heading our separate ways to meet again at Blockless Combat.

This years UK Independent Vert Series kicked off with it’s first ever Scottish leg at The Space in North Berwick. Unbelievably there’s not been a vert ramp in Scotland since The Church in Glasgow (which is probably before most of you started skating) so this was a fairly historic event!
It was good to see such a fine turnout of Scottish heads but maximum respect has to go to Sam Bosworth and his Dad though for making the long trek up from Cornwall.
The ramp is easily the smallest vert ramp on the series, reminiscent of many of the iconic 80′s vert ramps. Sean Goff should have been right at home but even he admitted to not being into to start with. The natives however attacked it like they always attack anything – padless (on the whole) and at full speed!  Ruari, Kerr, Paris and Colin Adam were all absolutely ripping and it was a pleasure to see.
The comp itself was as mellow as these things normally are, just jam format with everyone having a laugh and dishing out the abuse/encouragement. Sean seemed to adapt to the ramp better than any of the other visitors and walked away victorious!  Not sure there’s many people who’ve won comps in their 40′s, fair play, he seemed pretty stoked on it! Crowd pleaser Sam Bosworth came in second with his reckless approach and all the rest of the results are below.
On a side note:  North Berwick is a beautiful place.  The park is a lot of fun. I reckon you could pretty much camp up anywhere round there or there’s a cheap caravan site and loads of hotels. It’s a perfect place for a road trip, you should go.
